Along with this fear, Herd also stated that violence became a topic of concern in the rap music industry. There was a fear that the norm of using alcohol as a theme in rap music would encourage audiences to consume more alcohol. Interestingly enough, positive attitudes to the theme of alcohol use in rap music spiked from 43% to 73% (Herd 1260). From 1979-1997, songs that mentioned or referenced alcohol increased fivefold from 8 to 44%, while brand name mentions increased from 46% to 71% (Herd 1260). In the journal titled Changing Images of Violence in Rap Music, Denise Herd discusses the significance of alcohol being mentioned in rap music and its impact on audiences. Rap music often includes themes such as drug abuse, poverty, criminal activity and discrimination. ![]() These two key moments are significant indicators of the changes in rap music lyrics and audiences. The second key moment that changed rap music was the introduction of white rappers such as Eminem into a genre that was predominantly African American. The idea of the secret meeting qualifies as a key moment in rap music, regardless if it actually occurred, because this period in time marks the change of lyrics in rap music. A key moment that changed the course of rap music was the alleged secret meeting that occurred in 1991. In the late 80’s and 90’s, lyrics gradually became more explicit and increasingly violent, which raised concern to the potential effects it would have on social behavior. Rap music, in many cases, used themes linked to political and racial injustices faced by African-Americans. Hip hop fashion and slang became adopted into a nation where it was once deemed unacceptable. In the 1990’s, rap emerged into the mainstream and was accepted as a branch of American culture. As seen in the previous post, rap and hip-hop in the 1980’s became a creative outlet for American black youth (Wikipedia). After rap’s emergence in the early 1970’s, it was clear that this genre resounded with African American performers and audiences.
